How To Measure Stainless Steel Mesh

Here at The Metal Company we stock welded wire mesh and woven wire mesh.

Welded wire mesh is stainless steel wires laid in a grid pattern and tack welded where intersecting wires cross. Welded wire mesh is measured according to the size of the squares between the wire strands and the wire thickness. We can supply our 12.7×12.7 & 18x18mm Sizes from a 1220mm wide roll, but our other sizes from 25×25 to 100×100 are sold in full 1200x2400mm sheets.

Woven wire mesh is made by strands of stainless steel wire which are woven together. At some larger sizes, the wires are crinkled so they will hold their position and shape. Woven wire mesh is measured according to the Squares per Inch which is known as SPI. This means that woven wire mesh sized at 5×5 SPI has 5 squares per inch of mesh. Percentage open refers to the amount of open space in the mesh, which reduces as the squares get smaller. We stock all our woven wire mesh sizes from 1x1SPI to 60x60SPI on 1220mm wide rolls, and can cut it to length in 100 mm increments.

We also have small 100x100mm samples of both Welded and Woven Wire Mesh available so you can see which mesh will work for your application.
